Hi Everyone! My name is Keaton Bumgardner and I live in Fort Gratiot, MI. I have worked at DHL Global forwarding for the past six years but recently quit so I could stay home with my kids and concentrate on being a full time student. This is my first year in the WOW program. Prior to this I attended Central Michigan University for one year before moving back home and receiving my Associates degree from St. Clair County Community College. I have wanted to go back to school for a long time but with kids, family and work it just wasn't possible. I was thrilled when I found out that Wayne State offers a Social Work program that is strictly online. I live over an hour away from campus so the online program works out perfect and I can still maintain all of my other responsibilities.
I currently do not have a field placement and do not work in social work but prior to working at DHL, I worked with homeless, runaway and at-risk teens for 3 years at a transitional living program. This was a program where youth could live up to eighteen months and offers individual counseling, referrals, life skills training, and after-care services. We helped them develop necessary skills for independence, obtaining employment and housing and completing educational programs. During this time I worked alongside a social worker and was able to see the interaction they had with the residents. Even though I was able to work closely with the residents, it was the social worker who was able to have the most impact on them and I knew that was something that I wanted to be able to do. Once I graduate I hope to pursue my MSW and become a school social worker working with middle school or high school students.
What the School of Social Work’s mission means to me is that they are committed in giving their students the proper education and experience so we can be fully prepared when we become social workers. It will be our job to work with diverse populations and be able to give them the resources and help that is needed. The School of Social Work is devoted to make their students some of the best social workers out there, which is what I aspire to be.
The classes I have taken so far are Diversity Oppresion & Social Justice, Human Behavior in Social Environment, SW Practice Methods 1 and SW Welfare & SW Profession. I am currently enrolled in Ethics & Values, Research Methods in SW and SW Practice Methods 2. I still have to take Social Welfare Programs, SW Macro Theory & Practice, SW Group Theory & Practice, Social Welfare in the United States: Current Programs and Research Methods, Data Analysis and Practice Evaluation. I also still have to take a math class, which I am not looking forward too! I also will have my field placement next year. If I wasn't going into social work, I would have liked to become an ultra sound tech or x-ray tech.
I am married and have two wonderful boys Ethan 8, and Landan,5. We are huge baseball fans in my household. Both of my boys play and my husband coaches both teams, so I spend a lot of time at the ball field and if we aren't there then you can guarantee that a Tigers game is playing on the TV at home. When I do have some free time I enjoy reading and catching up on my DVR!
Finally five themes I would like to take away from this course is to become more educated about not letting my beliefs interfere with the client, become more familiar with the NASW Code of Ethics, learn more about values and ethics, become more organized and not be such a procrastinator.
