This exercise was a little difficult since I was only able to have four values at +3 and +2. My top four values that I rated at +3 were Personal Happiness, Family, Leading a Meaningful Life and Sanctity of Marriage. Obviously my husband and kids are my top priorities in my life right now. It is also important to me to be happy with myself and that’s why I rated that +3, if you are happy with yourself than you will be able to lead a meaningful life with the ones you love.
2. Exercise 07, page 28
Core Social Work Values: For each of the following scenarios, identify which core social work values (if any) are reflected by the social worker’s action: (1) service, (2) social justice, (3) dignity and worth of the person, (4) importance of human relationships, (5) integrity, (6) competence, (7) human rights, (8) scientific inquiry, or (9) none of the above.
a.)Integrity and service- This shows integrity because the social worker does not hide anything from the client even though she was thinking about it, which goes along with service because she was being truthful to the client and build a rapport with one another.
b.)Service
c.)Scientific Inquiry
d.)Human Rights
e.)Social Justice
f.)Competence
g.) None of the above
h.)Social Justice, Dignity and worth of a person, Human rights- The social worker is promoting social justice by working to educate the public about those with Down syndrome. She is concerned with the way they are perceived and being called derogatory names and thinks people with Down syndrome should be treated with dignity and respect and have the same human rights as we all do and that is why she is developing the media campaign.

3. Answer the following questions:
What does it mean to say you value:
◦ Family?
To value family means that my family is a priority in my life. I believe that they are an asset and valuable to my life.
◦ Open communication?
To value open communication means that I want to be able to talk and express my feelings and thoughts openly with others. It may just be able to feel comfortable talking to a friend or family member about something and knowing they will listen or it could mean being able to express ideas to a group of people and have them listen and respond.
◦ Self-sufficiency?
To value self-sufficiency means that being independent is important to you. It means that being able to take care of yourself and have confidence doing it is very valuable to you.
How might these values pose challenges for you as a professional?
These values could pose challenges for me as a professional because I may come across a client who does not have the same values as me. If a client does not value family the way I do, I might find it difficult to work with them but I think the most important thing is that I don’t let my own personnel values interfere with giving the client the service they deserve. It will be my job to only apply the social work ethics and values when with a client and not apply my own feelings and values.
