For social workers, what are the essential steps for ethical problem solving? And why do you think these steps are essential? Create a reference page.

Essential Steps for Ethical Problem-Solving according to NASW:

1.      Determine whether there is an ethical issue or dilemma

2.      Identify the key values and principles involved

3.      Rank the values or ethical principles which-in your professional judgment-are most relevant to the issue or dilemma.

4.      Develop an action plan that is consistent with the ethical priorities that have been determined as central to the dilemma.

5.      Implement your plan, utilizing the most appropriate practice skills and competencies.

6.      Reflect on the outcome of this ethical decision making process.

Why do you think these steps are essential?

These steps are essential because they are all steps that work toward problem solving. If you don’t follow each step or skip a step then it is possible that the desired outcome will not transpire. It takes more than just decision making to manage ethical issues, ethical management requires reflection, discussion, action, and review process.  Each step must be precisely managed because the social worker usually has to “loop” back to earlier steps and stages in order to complete the current step (Barsky 2010).
